A night out at the theatre is a great way to get out of your neighborhood and discover this incredible city. Los Angeles is home to a wealth of talented artists, producers and arts organizations. In between jobs, many artists are looking to reconnect to their live performance roots, and L.A. audiences benefit from that passion to perform. A number of incredible theatre companies have emerged throughout the years and have put L.A. on the map as a major player in new American theatre. The second annual Negroni Week is taking place across the country and around the world from June 2-8, 2014. During Negroni Week, participating bars - over 1,200 as this post goes live - are mixing up Negronis and donating at least $1 from each cocktail sold to a charity of their choice. Campari has announced that it will donate $10,000 to the qualified charity of the bar or restaurant that raises the most money during this year’s Negroni Week.

Besides the classic Negroni - made with gin, Campari, sweet vermouth - imbibers can look forward to variations like the Negroni No. 9 at Rivera, and special events like the Negroni Soirée, taking place at Harlowe on Tuesday, June 3.

Following are just a few of the dozens of participating bars and restaurants in Los Angeles. Check the Negroni Week website for a complete list of participating bars, then follow the social media action via Imbibe Magazine’s Twitter and Instagram feeds, and the #NegroniWeek hashtag. Cheers!

The community of Highland Park in Northeast Los Angeles (aka NELA) is home to an ideal mix of both old-school Latin American resident traditions and the contemporary dining trends that cater to the area’s growing new wave of younger residents. This means that within a one-mile radius you can find boldly seasoned Yucatan-style Cochinita Pibil tacos and a perfectly frothy cappuccino made with hemp milk. Many of the new business owners opening up in Highland Park have strong ties to the community, so the sense of pride is particularly strong. Add to all of this, the attractive five-minute driving distances to Pasadena, Downtown, Silver Lake and Glendale; the tree-lined rolling hills; and the Metro Rail Gold Line stop located in the middle of town, and you can see why Highland Park is a serious contender for the best neighborhood in Los Angeles. Hidden Gems in Silver Lake

05/30/2014

Esther Tseng

Silver Lake is one of L.A.'s most featured neighborhoods, named after one of two reservoirs around which it was drawn. Sunset Junction, Silver Lake's urban center, is located at the intersection of Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevards, two main L.A. streets that otherwise run parallel all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Until the mid-1950s, the Junction served as the site of the branching of two inter-urban railway lines. The neighborhood was also home to Walt Disney's first large studio from 1925 to 1939, located at Hyperion Avenue and Griffith Park Boulevard. Since then, the area has become renowned as a community that’s continuously in flux, home to a population that is diverse even by Los Angeles County's multicultural standards. Despite all the recent Silver Lake media coverage, it can still be hard to find the lesser known places worth visiting. Read on to discover Silver Lake’s must-see hidden gems.

Beef noodle soup, known as niu rou mian, is the epitome of Chinese comfort food. Found all throughout China and Taiwan, it’s a beloved dish that takes hours to make. Beef shanks must be slow-cooked for hours before they achieve their creamy texture. Noodles must be chewy, and most importantly, the broth must be rich and sustainable. Traditionally, the noodles are paired with a heaping of pickled mustard greens, which offers a crisp, sour contrast. Spicy is customizable and in some joints, used extremely liberally. It makes for a sustainable lunch or dinner and thankfully, there are plenty of places in Los Angeles to get your fix. Here are our picks.
