L.A. Tourism Celebrates "Summer Sneak Preview" On May 24, 2014
Updated on November 18, 2014
The Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board (L.A. Tourism) welcomes visitors and locals alike to celebrate L.A.'s unofficial “Summer Sneak Preview” on Saturday, May 24, 2014. No other region combines the multicultural concerts and festivals, movies al fresco, sports events and overall summertime vibe the way L.A. does, and the first day of Memorial Day weekend provides the ultimate primer for folks to get their summer on before the real deal starts next month. The music, cinematic and cultural events listed below will make the 24th a day to remember.
L.A.’s own soul-funk giants WAR and iconic countercultural comedy duo Cheech & Chong are on a double bill at the Greek Theatre, one of the country’s best outdoor amphitheaters. Recreational use of marijuana isn't legal in California (yet), but that won't stop lots of concert goers from making sure plenty of cannabis smoke will be wafting through the air of the Griffith Park concert venue. Guide yourselves accordingly.
Iranian singer Moein is playing a show at the world-famous Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. Hearing is believing, and in this case, the Dolby Theatre's state-of-the-art sound system will ensure that the music from this international superstar will be an aural feast.
Singer, songwriter and producer Romeo Santos will bring his famed bachata music - which originated in the Dominican Republic - to STAPLES Center in Downtown L.A. For those who just can't get enough, Santos also plays a STAPLES show on Thursday, May 22.
Singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega brings a little bit of her native New York City to L.A. with songs from her new Beauty & Crime release on Blue Note Records. Keep in mind, like a New York subway, the El Rey is mostly a standing-only affair.
Western Conference Finals Game 3: Los Angeles Kings vs. Chicago Blackhawks
On May 24, Game 3 of the NHL Western Conference Finals, featuring the Los Angeles Kings and the Chicago Blackhawks, is taking place at STAPLES Center, where the Kings clinched their first-ever Stanley Cup in 2012. The Blackhawks, the defending Stanley Cup champions, currently lead the best-of-seven series 1-0, with Game 2 in Chicago scheduled for Wednesday, May 21.
The Coen brothers’ 1998 L.A.-centric cult favorite, The Big Lebowski, will be shown at the Autry National Center on the West Coast’s largest outdoor movie screen. In true L.A. fashion, there will be food trucks. Bonus: dogs are allowed, so bring your four-legged friends.
Downtown L.A.’s historic core gets a little bit of Austin, Texas, circa 1976, with Richard Linklater's comedy, Dazed and Confused. The 1993 movie - screening at the Electric Dusk Drive-In - was a launching pad for several future stars such as Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich and a scene-stealing Matthew McConaughey. All right, all right, all right. NOTE: Presale tickets are sold out, a limited number of tickets will be available at the door.
Yelp + Uber Cocktail Crawl
Yelp and Uber have partnered to sponsor a cocktail crawl through three Los Angeles neighborhoods. This event will take place Saturday, May 24 and span Silverlake, Glendale and Pasadena. Attendees who check into one of the selected destinations with Yelp or produce an Uber receipt will be eligible to take advantage of the specials at participating bars, Vertical Wine Bistro, The Famous and Thirsty Crow. Uber is offering all attendees who are new users a free first ride up to $50, so that participants can get around safely during the cocktail crawl. New users can sign up with the code YelpUberCrawlLA to redeem their ride at the event.
L.A.-based beat poet Frank T. Rios, a longtime fixture in the Venice literary scene, reads from his own work to mark the opening of LACMA’s exhibition, Edward Biberman, Abbot Kinney and the Story of Venice. Biberman’s mural about the creation of Venice was completed in 1941 for the Venice Post Office and has since been restored.
The Renberg Theatre welcomes back legendary comedy icon Margaret Cho, who is joining forces with the burlesque and comedy community for a special, one-night-only performance of her nationwide hit show, The Sensuous Woman. Cho is the star of a wild and hilarious burlesque, comedy, music and belly-dance revue, hosted by comedian Ian Harvie. Performances include burlesque sensation Princess Farhana, Liam Sullivan as Kelly, John Roberts and other special guests. This show is a benefit to help a fellow artist, Selene Luna, by raising money to recoup crucial income lost from being laid up for two months.
Fiesta Hermosa, Southern California’s largest arts and crafts fair, returns to the Hermosa Pier with more than 300 artists and artisans, as well as a ton of live music and great food. If you miss the festival Saturday, it runs through Monday, and if you miss it this holiday weekend, it returns for Labor Day Weekend.
At the Valley Greek Festival, homemade pastries and other Greek culinary delights, combined with live Greek folk music, provide a feast for the eyes, ears and palates. This festival also goes through Monday, May 26. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes. There will be dancing. Lots of dancing.
