Zoe Nathan's Los Angeles
Zoe Nathan describes herself as a baker with a love of preparing all things dough and dessert related. Her approach to baking is centered around the use of great ingredients, a healthy mix of sweet and salty, and her personal adage about baking dark that “color is flavor.” Nathan infuses this philosophy into all four of the restaurants she co-owns with her husband Josh Loeb: Rustic Canyon Wine Bar & Seasonal Kitchen, Huckleberry Café and Bakery, Sweet Rose Creamery, and Milo and Olive. Read on for 10 of Zoe Nathan's favorite restaurants in L.A.
Kiriko Sushi
It's our favorite sushi place. The fish is amazing, and our son Milo loves the lotus root and sitting in front of Tomo, one of the sushi chefs. He'll put anything in his mouth as long as Tomo made it.
Flores + Sons
We went here on our first date night after we felt comfortable leaving our second child Tallula home with a sitter. We love sitting on the patio, eating Brian's food and Sarah's desserts.
Habayit
The best Israeli food in town. We love the Chicken Schnitzel, all the salads, and the best falafel ever.
Funnel Mill Rare Coffee & Tea
We love this place for coffee. They are so knowledgeable, but incredibly sweet too and in addition to making great Siphon coffee, they make an amazing latte.
Co-Opportunity Natural Foods
This is our favorite place to shop for groceries and they make the best smoothies as well. We cram like 800 ingredients in there.
Rustic Canyon Wine Bar
We know we probably shouldn't say one of our restaurants, but Jeremy's food is so amazing, it's really hard not to say this. Plus, it's where we eat most often when we go out.
For oysters, peel and eat shrimp, and cocktails. It's down the street from our house and we love it.
The whole poached lobster there is one of our favorite things to eat. We start with that and build a meal around it.
Republique
Any time Walter and Marge are cooking, you know you're going to eat well. Nothing is more fun than sitting in that beautiful restaurant with a glass of Champagne, a plate of oysters, and some of that deliciously garlicky escargot.
Trois Mec
We've only been once, but loved our meal. The food was great and we loved having the cooks bring their own dishes directly to the table. It made the whole experience that much better.
Zoe Nathan’s first cookbook, Huckleberry: Stories, Secrets, and Recipes from Our Kitchen is being released by Chronicle Books on Sept. 9, 2014. Huckleberry contains 115 recipes for the legendary brunch dishes, sweets, sides and pastries that Nathan serves at her flagship restaurant.
At Huckleberry, Nathan oversees production of the handcrafted breads, breakfast pastries, and desserts made with techniques rooted in the French tradition. She also creates all the savory breakfast and lunch dishes at Huckleberry, many of which, like Green Eggs & Ham and her delightfully messy Fried Egg Sandwich, have become classics around the L.A. dining scene. “Our restaurants are as much about our team as they are about any particular philosophy,” she explains. “Baking is where I found my voice, as well as some amazing people - in the case of Huckleberry, some really neat women - who share my same values for running a family business.”
