Walking the Line Between Inspiration & Reality: The Line Hotel

You wake up in your room at The Line in Koreatown and for a moment you forget it’s not an artist loft. The functionality and simplicity of Midcentury industrial design and architecture turn you on, and you already know that this building dates back to 1964 but feels perfectly tomorrow, thanks to designer, Sean Knibb and his minimalist concrete interiors. And yes, that huge "PEACE" mural is by famed street artist, Shepard Fairey.

You can travel around the world without even leaving the hotel, starting bright and early at the lobby Cafe. Sample the "delicious chaos" of Taiwanese bakeries, Korean underground markets and Mexican panaderias all in one spot.

Surrounded by neon and Korean signs, thoughts of Seoul fill your mental vision board, but there’s always something special about L.A. — you can’t help dreaming big here, looking out the wall of windows facing the Hollywood Sign. This is L.A., but you don’t need a car to get around, so you’ve signed up for one of the 25 Linus bicycles that guests can ride around town. For longer trips, the Wilshire/Normandie station on the Metro Purple Line is right across the street — thank you and hello, Metro Day Pass.

There are Korean BBQ places everywhere, or a short walk takes you to Here’s Looking At You, one of the best new restaurants in the city. If you’re in a Rat Pack mood, Taylor’s Steakhouse is a classic retro spot.

Later that night, it’s a dream come true – you’re singing on stage with a live band at Breakroom 86, an 80s-themed bar hidden inside The Line, featuring VHS karaoke menus and a DJ booth fashioned from boomboxes.

Music is life, so you’ve got to go a concert at The Wiltern, an Art Deco landmark that’s just a few blocks away — Grimes, Kendrick Lamar, LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, Mac Demarco, Blood Orange, Peter Bjorn and John. After the show, have a nightcap at the Normandie Club or step into a Mad Men bar at HMS Bounty.

Music, food, art, design and inspiration, 24/7 — this is Koreatown, this is Los Angeles, and you’re living the dream at The Line
