L.A. Tourism Market Outlook Forum - August 25, 2016

Save the date for the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board (LATCB) Market Outlook Forum, the strategic forecasting conference aimed at businesses interested in capitalizing on L.A.’s record-breaking tourism growth.

Los Angeles Wins 2016 British LGBT Award

Los Angeles received the British LGBT Award for 2016 Destination of the Year. Designed to showcase individuals and organizations that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the LGBT community, the British LGBT Awards champion the very best in LGBT talent and celebrate LGBT-friendly businesses. Dubbed Britain’s “Gay Oscars,” the Awards are the U.K.’s most publicized LGBT event annually. Los Angeles took home this prestigious honor going up against seven other notable LGBT-friendly destinations: Madrid, Amsterdam, Dublin, Berlin, Phuket, Toronto and Zurich.

L.A. Shines at the 2016 James Beard Awards!

The 2016 James Beard Foundation Awards have been announced, and Los Angeles chefs won awards in several of the top categories, including:

  • Outstanding Chef: Suzanne Goin (The Lucques Group - a.o.c., Lucques, Tavern, The Larder Baking Co, Hollywood Bowl concessions)
  • Best Chef West: Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (Jon and Vinny's, Son of a Gun, Animal, Trois Familia, Petit Trois, Trois Mec)
  • Outstanding Pastry Chef: Dahlia Narvaez (Mozza Restaurant Group - Pizzeria Mozza, Osteria Mozza, chi SPACCA)

INDUSTRY NEWS & NOTES

According to research from the U.S. Travel Association, travelers during Memorial Day weekend in late May were expected to spend a total of $12 billion on their trips, an increase of 1.2 percent from last year. AAA forecasted that 38 million Americans were going to travel 50 miles or more during the holiday weekend.

Los Angeles World Airports forecasted a busy Memorial Day weekend at LAX as the airport expected more than 849,000 passengers to pass through during the period. LAX expects to handle a record 24.5 million passengers during the upcoming summer travel season, which lasts through Labor Day.

French leisure carrier XL Airways launched nonstop service to Paris three times a week at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for the first time operating at Terminal 2 with Airbus A330 aircraft on June 1, 2016.

WOW air, Iceland’s ultra low-cost airline, kicked off its West Coast service in Los Angeles on June 15, with WOW Airbus A330-300 flight from Los Angeles to Reykjavik, Iceland.  WOW air will offer regular weekly service to Reykjavik for as low as $99.
