El Nino: What You Need to Know

Despite a dry couple of weeks, El Nino has definitely arrived.

While it’s nearly impossible to predict the weather, this year’s El Nino is forecasted to be significant. As such, we at L.A. Tourism have prepared an action plan to help ensure visitor safety and comfort remain a top priority.

Over the past several months, the team has:

  • Prepared talking points about El Nino that can be used for media, tour operators, meeting planners or visitors; you can find a link to these talking points HERE
  • Coordinated with Visit California and the City of Los Angeles to ensure messaging and activation synergy:

- The City of Los Angeles has created an El Nino preparedness site which you can access by visiting http://www.elninola.com/
- Their media kit can be accessed here: http://www.elninola.com/resources/#/media-kit/

  • Engaged daily social and traditional media monitoring, keeping an eye on the following:

- Geographic misrepresentation/confusion (statements of “L.A.” when the reported event is really 85 miles east of us, etc.)
- General sentiment/perception about what’s happening in L.A.
- Opportunities to insert messaging about visitor safety or positive visitor experiences
- Top tweets and their geographic origin

  • Fine-tuned our crisis communications plan
  • Developed a bank of content called insideLA which highlights the wealth of indoor activities visitors can enjoy while in Los Angeles. We are developing one-sheeters with these details which hotels can distribute at check-in, but the content can also be found here: http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/insideLA
  • Reached out to members/partners to gather any available “rainy day” packages (overnight packages, restaurant deals, etc.) that are shareable with media
  • Looking ahead, we’ll be partnering with local media who contribute to key market or national publications as well as key social media influencers to have them experience activities contained within our insideLA content. We’ll also ensure they are regularly updated with correct information about El Nino’s impact on L.A.

Please reach out to Jamie Foley, Vice President of Global Communications, at jfoley@latourism.org if you have any questions about LATCB’s El Nino action plan or how LATCB can help serve as a resource for you.
