Los Angeles Event Spotlight: August 2014

It’s the dog days of summer, and the Los Angeles calendar is really starting to heat up with fantastic events taking place across the city. From the Freeway Series to superstar concerts and the Tall Ships Festival, here are highlights of an exciting month of events.
Aug. 7-8: Eminem X Rihanna The Monster Tour - Rose Bowl
Two music superstars, Eminem and Rihanna, are joining forces this summer for The Monster Tour, a series of co-headlining stadium shows that launches at Rose Bowl Stadium on Thursday, August 7. The opening night of The Monster Tour is sold out, but a second night at the Rose Bowl, August 8, has been added and is now on sale. Eminem and Rihanna first teamed up on the 2010 song Love the Way You Lie, and reunited for The Monster, which was released as the fourth single from Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2.

Aug. 7-10: Sundance NEXT FEST - Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles
Fueled by the renegade spirit of independent artists, Sundance NEXT FEST is a new breed of festival experience that celebrates the intersection of music and film. NEXT FEST kicks off on Thursday, August 7 with an outdoor screening of Napoleon Dynamite with Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. NEXT FEST continues through the weekend with the L.A. premieres of six new films at the historic Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles. Each film is paired with either a special music performance that embodies a shared artistic sensibility, or a conversation that brings together filmmakers with those who inspired them. Highlights include Life After Beth with a performance by Father John Misty (August 8), and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night with L.A.’s own Warpaint on August 10.

Aug. 8: Nike Basketball 3ON3 Tournament - L.A. LIVE
The Nike Basketball 3ON3 Tournament features three fun-filled days of basketball, entertainment, food, giveaways and more. Taking place on Friday, August 8 on the streets of L.A. LIVE, the tournament invites all skill levels to compete, from “ballers” in the Adult Elite Division to Youth, Wheelchair and Special Olympics divisions. The inaugural Nike Basketball 3ON3 Tournament took place in August 2009 and featured over 500 teams and more than 13,000 players and spectators. Since then, the tournament has grown to become one of the largest 3ON3 street basketball tournaments and fan fests in Los Angeles. Annual participation in Nike Basketball 3ON3 exceeds 1,200 teams, 4,500 players and 25,000 spectators, with participants and spectators coming from all over the country.

Aug. 9: L.A. Craft Beer Crawl
Now in its fifth year, the L.A. Craft Beer Crawl is a collaboration between Cedd Moses of 213 Ventures and The Beer Chicks, Hallie Beaune and Christina Perozzi. Taking place on Saturday, August 9 from 1-7 p.m., the festival features over 100 craft beers across eight Downtown L.A. bars and restaurants: Golden Gopher, Caña Rum Bar, Seven Grand, Casey’s Irish Pub, Cole’s, Las Perlas, Broadway Bar, and Honeycut, 213’s red-hot cocktail lounge and disco. Check in and entry is located at Casey’s, where guests will receive a map to plan and navigate the crawl route. The Beer Chicks are curating the beer selections for the crawl, including El Segundo Brewing, Strand Brewing Company, Monkish Brewing Company, Allagash Brewing Company, Goose Island Beer Company, Eagle Rock Brewery, Stone Brewing, Ladyface Ale Companie, TAPS Fish House and Brewery, and many more. Beer-friendly grub from Casey's, Cole's, Pellicola Pizzeria and The Grilled Cheese Truck will be available for purchase.

Aug. 9–17: Nisei Week - Little Tokyo
The Nisei Week Japanese Festival is a nine-day event that was first held in 1934, and is recognized today as one of the longest-running multicultural festivals in the United States. The 2014 edition of Nisei Week is taking place Downtown L.A.’s Little Tokyo district from August 9-17. Festival highlights include the Grand Parade, taiko drummers, martial arts demonstrations, car show, and the World Gyoza Eating Championship.

AUG. 14-17: AVP MANHATTAN BEACH OPEN
The most anticipated and prestigious tournament on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour is located in Manhattan Beach, the birthplace of beach volleyball. The AVP Manhattan Beach Open is taking place on August 14-17 on the south side of the historic Manhattan Beach Pier, continuing a tradition that’s been a summer highlight in the South Bay since 1960. The world’s best beach volleyball players, including Manhattan Beach resident and three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, are scheduled to compete in the tournament. The beach party atmosphere includes live music, 12-plus courts of world-class volleyball action, and interactive activities. General admission is free. Aug. 20-24: Tall Ships Festival - Port of Los Angeles
On August 20-24, the Port of Los Angeles welcomes more than a dozen international and domestic tall ships from all over the Pacific Ocean for Tall Ships Festival L.A. 2014. During the festival, visitors will have the rare chance to view, step aboard, and even set sail on these grand ships. In addition, the historic Battleship IOWA and the Victory Ship, S.S. Lane Victory will also be open for tours with your festival ticket. Entertainment includes live music from a variety of genres, movies shown on tall ship sails, and the World’s Largest Rubber Duck. Kids will love the cannon demonstrations, authentic privateer encampment, real sword fighting, knot tying, weapon demos and sail training with real tall ship rigging. Aug. 22-24: The Beatles 50th at the Bowl - Hollywood Bowl
It’s been 50 years since The Beatles played their first iconic show at the Hollywood Bowl, and Beatlemania is still going strong. That momentous night will be celebrated at The Beatles 50th at the Bowl, taking place on Friday-Sunday, August 22-24, featuring Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) as ringmaster and musical director, along with special guests. Besides live performances of many Beatles classics, including “Twist and Shout,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “A Hard Day’s Night,” the historic set will be re-created, along with vintage clips and much more.

Aug. 28: Lee “Scratch” Perry - Santa Monica Pier
On Thursday, August 28, the 30th annual Twilight Concerts at the Santa Monica Pier welcomes Lee “Scratch” Perry, along with Mexico 68 and KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole. Perry is a Grammy Award-winning reggae and dub artist who has played an instrumental role in the development and acceptance of reggae and dub music in Jamaica and overseas. Perry’s influence and legacy is comparable to pioneers like George Martin, Phil Spector, and Brian Wilson.

Aug. 29–31: Los Angeles Times The Taste - Paramount Pictures Studios
Presented by the Los Angeles Times, The Taste is a three-day gastronomic adventure taking place on the backlot at Paramount Pictures Studios on August 29-31. The Taste features five events that highlight different aspects of Southern California food culture: Opening Night, Field to Fork, Dinner with a Twist, Sunday Brunch, and Flavors of L.A. The events feature unlimited food and drink tastings from more than 40 of the area’s top restaurants, cooking and mixology demonstrations, wine seminars and panel discussions. Aug. 29–Sept. 28: Los Angeles County Fair - Fairplex
The annual Los Angeles County Fair (LACF) celebrates its 92nd anniversary with food, attractions and entertainment for all ages. This Southern California family tradition is taking place at the Fairplex in Pomona, beginning on Labor Day Weekend and running throughout September. New this year is Luminasia, featuring giant Chinese lanterns fashioned into iconic landmarks; Hall of Heroes, which looks at the science behind superheroes; Grinding Gears, a Steampunk-themed nightclub; and The Farm, filled with animals and agri-tainment. Aug. 30-31: Made in America - Grand Park
Jay Z’s Made in America festival takes over Grand Park in Downtown L.A. on Saturday-Sunday, August 30-31, the weekend before Labor Day. Scheduled performers include Kanye West, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, John Mayer, Weezer, Iggy Azalea and Afrojack. The festival will take place across three stages, named after pop culture icons: the main Marilyn stage (located on the steps of City Hall, facing Spring Street), the Dylan stage (at the intersection of 1st and Spring Streets), and the James Dean stage, featuring DJs and electronica performances.
