Halloween doesn’t happen until the end of the month, but don’t worry, there’s plenty to do in Los Angeles before Oct. 31. From a hit Broadway musical to spectacular exhibits, superstar concerts and the world’s first Hello Kitty convention, here are 12 great L.A. events taking place in October.
Oct. 1–19: "Jersey Boys" - Pantages Theatre
Described as “the most exciting musical Broadway has seen in years” by Chicago Tribune, “Jersey Boys” is the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award®-winning Best Musical about Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. Now playing at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, “Jersey Boys” tells the true story of how four blue-collar kids became one of the greatest successes in pop music history. “Jersey Boys” features their hit songs “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Oh What a Night” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
Oct. 2, 2014 - March 2, 2015: “Hollywood Costume” - May Company Building
The Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences present the groundbreaking multimedia exhibition, "Hollywood Costume" in the historic May Company Building, the future location of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. On view Oct. 2, 2014 through March 2, 2015, this ticketed exhibition explores the central role of costume design as an essential tool of cinematic storytelling. "Hollywood Costume" brings together over 150 of the world's most iconic costumes from the Golden Age of cinema to the present. In addition, "Hollywood Costume" will showcase the Academy's pair of the most famous shoes in the world – the original ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), shown with Dorothy's blue and white gingham pinafore dress.
Oct. 8: Los Angeles Kings vs. San Jose Sharks - STAPLES Center
The defending Stanley Cup champions, the Los Angeles Kings open the 2014-15 season against their in-state rivals, the San Jose Sharks at STAPLES Center on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The Sharks won the first three games of their first-round series against the Kings in April, only to lose four straight to L.A. The Kings became the fourth team in NHL history to rally from a 3-0 deficit, then went on to win two more epic seven-game series before defeating the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final.

Oct. 12: 30th Annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles - West Hollywood
The 30th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles, the world’s first walk to fight the epidemic, is taking place on Sunday, Oct. 12. The 10k (6.2-mile) route begins and ends in West Hollywood Park. The event will raise vital funds for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and more than 20 other L.A. County AIDS service organizations. In 2013, AIDS Walk Los Angeles raised more than $2.5 million for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and advocacy programs. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $76 million to fight the disease in Los Angeles County, and the AIDS Walk movement has raised more than a half-billion dollars nationwide.
Oct. 16: Massive Attack - Greek Theatre
The pioneering force behind the rise of trip-hop, Massive Attack plays the Greek Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 16. Massive Attack is regarded as one of the most innovative and influential groups of their generation. Their dark and cinematic sound - a fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, and choice samples - set the pace for much of the dance music to emerge throughout the 1990s.

Oct. 17–19: Pasadena Heritage Craftsman Weekend - Old Pasadena
The 2014 Pasadena Heritage Craftsman Weekend will include an exceptional variety of architectural tours, including walking, bus, self-guided and an all-day drive-yourself tour of unique examples of Pasadena's extraordinary Craftsman-era homes. The Craftsman Exposition features exhibitors of period furnishings and decorative arts, and special receptions will be hosted at historic sites on Friday and Saturday evenings. About 3,000 guests from around the world are expected to visit Pasadena during Craftsman Weekend. Attendees will be able to immerse themselves in the American Arts and Crafts Movement that is so wonderfully demonstrated throughout Pasadena, the West Coast center for the movement during the early twentieth century.
Oct. 24: “Exposed: Songs for Unseen Warhol Films” - Royce Hall
Created in celebration of the Andy Warhol Museum’s 20th anniversary, “Exposed: Songs for Unseen Warhol Films” is taking place on Friday, Oct. 24 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. “Exposed” is a multimedia performance event that unveils 15 never-before-seen 1960s films captured by Andy Warhol, featuring Marcel Duchamp, Edie Sedgwick, Donovan, Warhol himself, and others. Five songwriter-composers who reflect the generational and musical influence of post-Velvet Underground 70s to today will perform live original scores to these cinematic gems. The house band will be comprised of Britta Phillips on bass and vocals, Roger Brogan on drums, Jason Quever on guitar, keyboard and vocals.
Oct. 24: Phish - The Forum
Phish are the ultimate psychedelic jam band, and they've got the diehard fanbase to prove it. Beloved for their commitment to the counterculture, superb improvisation skills, and quirky on-stage antics, the band never lets their "Phans" down in concert, and their 2013 shows celebrating their 30th anniversary were no exception. Cranking out marathon sets of three decades worth of hits, the band triggered more than a few out-of-body experiences at their shows, leaving fans hungry for more Phish hits the road for 12 dates this fall. Phish plays The Forum on Oct. 24, their first L.A. concert since 2003.
Oct. 24–26: Bob Dylan & His Band - Dolby Theatre
Legendary musician, Bob Dylan will play a three-night stand, Oct. 24-26, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Dylan’s L.A. concerts are part of the fabled “Never Ending Tour,” which continues this fall with a 31-date North American tour. The current setlist is mostly focused on material from the past 15 years, with some nights featuring only a few songs from his classic 1960s catalog.

Oct. 25-26: STEAM Carnival - CRAFTED
STEAM Carnival is a unique, high-energy event featuring tech-infused game attractions and carnival-inspired entertainment to thrill, amuse, and reimagine the way we learn. Taking place Oct. 25-26 at CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles, STEAM Carnival infuses over 90,000 square feet of fun, featuring: giant high-tech games; mad science demos; wearable electronics fashion shows; musical robots; circus acrobats, aerialists, and fire breathers; and tasting games and artisanal carnival food.
Oct. 30 – Nov. 2: Hello Kitty Convention
Celebrate Hello Kitty's 40th Anniversary at the world’s first-ever official Hello Kitty Convention! Hello Kitty Con 2014 is a global gathering of fans and friends to celebrate all things Hello Kitty. Taking place at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Downtown L.A.'s Little Tokyo, Hello Kitty Con 2014 will offer interactive experiences and events for fans and friends of all ages, including activities, art, exhibits, exclusives, workshops, lectures, panels, sneak peeks, tattoos, food, fun, and much more.
Oct. 31 – Nov. 1: Breeders’ Cup World Championships - Santa Anita Park
The Breeders' Cup World Championships return to Santa Anita Park on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Since its inception in 1984, the Breeders' Cup is now considered one of the top events in Thoroughbred racing, and draws the best equine athletes from around the world for two of the most exciting days in the sport. The Breeders' Cup is considered a deciding factor in Eclipse Award voting, which honors Horse of the Year. Champions such as Zenyatta, Skip Away, Curlin and Street Sense have all made their marks at the Breeders' Cup, and consequently imprinted themselves in the history books.
