L.A. Story Spotlight: Yoshiki
Interviewed by Izumi Hasegawa
Japanese rock icon Yoshiki has lived in Los Angeles for about 20 years, after he purchased a famous music studio near Universal Studios Hollywood. I spoke to him while he was busy preparing for his first solo classical world tour, which starts April 25 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County. Even though he has spent almost half of his life in L.A., it seems he can’t live without Japanese food. His favorite restaurants are very Japanese, and very tasty. Read on for more about Yoshiki's Los Angeles.
GRAMMY Museum at L.A. LIVE
My exhibition is going on at the Grammy Museum. My piano was displayed only the first month of the exhibition. But they may display it again because I may do some kind of event again there. They are showing my costumes and more at my exhibition. Last August, I did a concert at the Clive Davis Theater in the Grammy Museum. Then I had a launching party with a mini concert on the rooftop of the Grammy Museum in February.
The Beverly Hills Hotel And Bungalows
I used to live at the Beverly Hills Hotel in a bungalow so I used to go there every day. They have kind of like a home vibe. They used to have a soufflé but I don’t know if they still have it. The last time I was there I had lobster risotto and it was great!
The Beverly Hilton
I like the Beverly Hilton because of a lot of memories with the Golden Globe Awards. I’ve attended three: 2011, 2012 and 2013. [Yoshiki composed the Golden Globes theme music, which debuted in 2012.]
Soho House West Hollywood
Since I am a member, I go there twice a month or so, mostly for meetings. Soho House has a lot of people from the entertainment industry and film industry so that I bump into a lot of famous people there. Usually I go there at lunch time. I love their Burrata. It is kind of like a mozzarella cheese. Burrata cheese is my favorite. I usually order kale salad and Burrata cheese.
Grand Havana Room
The Grand Havana Room cigar bar in Beverly Hills is another membership club. Like the Soho House, I see famous people there too. I used to smoke both cigarettes and cigars but I stopped cigarettes 10 years ago on my mother’s birthday. That was her wish at the time. So I smoke cigars once in a while, like one cigar a month or every two months. Cigars you don’t really smoke often. You have your own humidor you can keep there. You might be surprised that the Grand Havana Room has really good steak.
Kiwami
I love Katsuya restaurants and chef Katsuya [Uechi] is a friend of mine as well. I go to Kiwami by Katsuya in Studio City. Sometimes I have small, private parties at my home and sometimes he comes to cook for me. I love Japanese food and I like fusion too. They have amazing Japanese fusion, very creative. Their spicy tuna with crispy rice is my favorite!
Nobu Malibu
They have a nice vibe. I love their atmosphere and of course their food as well, [which is] Japanese fusion. I know Nobu [Matsuhisa], so that when I see him, I say “hi.” I always like their tuna steak.
Asanebo
I go there often, once a month or so. It’s a kind of Japanese fusion as well but they also have traditional Japanese sushi. Last time I was there, I had caviar maki (roll). It was very tasty!
L.A. is a city of stories. Not just screenplays and novels. But real life stories that can only happen in L.A. A close encounter with dolphins. A brush with a celebrity. A cupcake from a vending machine. It could be an event, an exhibit, a song. But the moment it happens, you can’t wait to tell everyone back home about it. What's your L.A. story?
