Every year during awards season, Los Angeles rolls out the red carpet for the entertainment industry, media and fans from around the world. Throughout the city, special events and cultural attractions celebrate the highest achievements in movies, television and music.
76th Golden Globe Awards (Jan. 6, 2019)
The 76th Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton on January 6. Hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, the Golden Globes - bestowed by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) - recognize excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign.
Green Book led the field with three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. The Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody scored a big upset by winning Best Motion Picture - Drama over the favorite, A Star Is Born, which won Best Original Song for "Shallow." Co-host Sandra Oh was the first woman of Asian descent in 39 years to win Best Actress in a TV Drama. The Canadian actress also made history as the first person of Asian descent to host the Golden Globes.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood has announced new additions from two Golden Globe-nominated box office hits to the Tour’s finale at Stage 48: Script to Screen. Tour guests can see authentic props and costumes from the critically acclaimed A Star is Born and Crazy Rich Asians, the highest-grossing romantic comedy in a decade and the first film by a major Hollywood studio in 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast in a modern setting.

Located in Beverly Hills, The Paley Center for Media is the foremost public archive of television and radio programming, with an international collection of nearly 150,000 programs spanning almost 100 years. Throughout the year, the Paley Center celebrates television with a wide range of events that examine the creative process behind great entertainment.
Produced by The Paley Center for Media, the 36th annual PaleyFest LA is taking place March 15-24, 2019 at the world-famous Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The premier television festival in the country, PaleyFest brings fans together with the hottest stars and creative talents in TV. Watch your favorite shows on the big screen along with other superfans, followed by a moderated Q&A with the cast and creative team. Named for William S. Paley, founder of CBS and The Paley Center for Media, proceeds from the event support the nonprofit Paley Center. Highlights of the 2019 festival include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (March 15), Grace and Frankie (March 16), An Evening With Stephen Colbert (March 16), RuPaul's Drag Race (March 17), Parks and Recreation Reunion (March 21), The Walking Dead (March 22), and Star Trek: Discovery with a special preview of Jordan Peele's The Twilight Zone (March 24).
Grammy Awards (FEB. 10, 2019)
The 61st GRAMMY Awards took place on February 10 at STAPLES Center, giving music fans and awards aficionados alike plenty to sing about at L.A. LIVE. The Grammy is the recording industry's most prestigious award, presented by The Recording Academy to honor excellence in the recording arts and sciences.
The ceremony began with a surprise appearance by Michelle Obama, who walked on stage to thunderous applause along with Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Alicia Keys, and Jennifer Lopez. Childish Gambino's "This Is America" made history as the first hip hop song to win Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Cardi B likewise broke ground as the first solo female artist to win Best Rap Album for "Invasion of Privacy." Kacey Musgraves took home four Grammys, including Album of the Year and Best Country Album for "Golden Hour."

91st Academy Awards (Feb. 24, 2019)
On Sunday, February 24, hundreds of millions of viewers will tune in to watch the 91st Academy Awards, taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. This will be the first Oscar ceremony since 1989 without a designated host. The ceremony will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide. The Oscars reward the previous year’s greatest cinema achievements as determined by some of the world’s most accomplished motion picture artists and professionals. Awards are presented for outstanding individual or collective efforts in 24 categories.
The Favourite and Roma lead this year’s field with 10 nominations each, including Best Picture. A Star Is Born and Vice each received eight nods, followed by Black Panther with seven, BlacKkKlansman with six, and Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book with five each. Black Panther made history as the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture. Other firsts: Spike Lee received his first-ever Best Director nomination, for BlacKkKlansman; Lady Gaga is the first person nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Song ("Shallow" from A Star is Born); Roma is Netflix's first Best Picture nominee, and star Yalitza Aparicio is the first indigenous Best Actress nominee.

To coincide with the Oscars, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) presents the 27th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition from February 5 – April 12, 2019. The popular exhibition celebrates the art and industry of costume designers with a showcase of costumes from notable films of the past year. More than 100 outstanding costume designs will be on display, including this year's Academy Award nominees for Best Costume Design and many more. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Scheduled to open in late 2019, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world’s premier institution devoted to exploring the art and science of movies and moviemaking. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the museum will be housed in the landmark May Company—now the Saban Building—on Wilshire Boulevard and a distinctive spherical addition. The 300,000-square-foot museum will feature more than 50,000 square feet of gallery space for an immersive permanent exhibition and a diverse schedule of temporary exhibitions, two film and performance theatres, a state-of-the-art education studio, and dynamic spaces for public and special events. Located in the historic Max Factor Building, the Hollywood Museum boasts the largest collection of memorabilia in the world - over 10,000 items including costumes, props, photographs, scripts, star's personal belongings and other vintage movie memorabilia. Key artifacts on display year-round Marilyn Monroe's wedding night dress, Elvis' bathrobe, the jail cell from Silence of the Lambs, Rocky's boxing gloves, Indiana Jones' whip and much more. You can also trace the history of Hollywood's Walk of Fame, see the earliest Technicolor film shot and read the messages on the actual bathroom wall taken from actor Roddy McDowall's home, which is covered by notes and photos by famous friends who visited during one of his infamous house parties. Film Independent Spirit Awards (Feb. 23, 2019)
Los Angeles has a long tradition of hosting awards ceremonies, but there's nothing traditional about the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which recognizes the finest achievements of today's independent filmmakers and takes place the day before the Oscars. Co-hosted by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, the 33rd annual ceremony was held under a lavish tent on the beach near the historic Santa Monica Pier. Other than entertainment industry members and sponsors, the Spirit Awards are closed to the public, though the ceremony is broadcast live on IFC. Jordan Peele's Get Out won Best Feature and Peele won Best Director. Timothée Chalamet and Frances McDormand took home the top acting awards. Mudbound received the Robert Altman Award, given to the film's director, casting director, and ensemble cast.

Film Independent at LACMA is a year-round weekly film series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art that offers unique cinematic experiences for the L.A. creative community and the general public. The series brings together Film Independent’s creative community of filmmakers and a wide spectrum of audiences, with LACMA’s commitment to presenting cinema in an artistic and historical context. Film Independent at LACMA events include screenings of classic and contemporary films; conversations with artists, curators and special guests; international showcases; and guest-curated programs.
For the acclaimed Live Read series, Academy Award-nominated director Jason Reitman chooses a classic film script and casts a group of celebrated actors to do an unrehearsed read through of the material. While the series usually takes place at LACMA, a recent event featured a Live Read of The Empire Strikes Back at the Theatre at Ace Hotel. The cast included Aaron Paul as Luke Skywalker, J.K. Simmons as Darth Vader, Jessica Alba as Princess Leia, and Mark Hamill as the Emperor.
