Rain Room (2012) is large-scale installation by the London-based artist collective rAndom International. On view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) through April 24, 2016, Rain Room is an immersive environment of continuously falling water that pauses wherever a human body is detected. The installation offers visitors an opportunity to experience the seemingly impossible: the ability to control rain. Upon entering this surreal environment, visitors can move through the space freely, protected from the downpour that surrounds them.
Tickets
Rain Room is a specially ticketed experience. Tickets are dated and timed, and advance reservations are required as capacity is limited. Each Rain Room visit lasts about 10–15 minutes. During the allotted time, 18 to 22 people may enter the gallery while five to seven people may proceed into the rain at once. LACMA security guards are responsible for time management within the gallery space and will assist visitors as they move throughout the work.
Reserved tickets to Rain Room are now available to the public online at the LACMA website. Tickets are not transferable and there are no refunds.
LACMA members receive special benefits and access to Rain Room, including discounted tickets for $10 per person. Discounted member tickets are available by phone or in person only - they are not available online. Please call Membership Services at 323.857.6151 to purchase your discounted members-only tickets.
Tickets are $10 for NexGen members and youth ages 3-17. There is no fee for children ages 0-2. NexGen adult guests may purchase Rain Room tickets for $15.
For non-members, tickets to Rain Room are priced at $15 for an upgrade to an existing General Admission (GA) ticket or Specially Ticketed Exhibition (Frank Gehry) ticket.
According to LACMA, visitors should arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes prior to their reservation. Check in at a LACMA Ticket Office to retrieve your reserved tickets or to purchase tickets, pending availability. Tickets may be retrieved from a LACMA Ticket Office on the reserved date by the original purchaser only. Photo ID is required to retrieve your pre-purchased tickets.
"Rain Room" Facts
- Rain Room is located on Level 1 of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM).
- Rain Room is a dark installation space that features falling water. Visitors may get wet.
- Visitors are discouraged from wearing dark, shiny or reflective fabric.
- Shoes must be worn at all times. High-heeled shoes are not allowed.
- Rain Room may close for brief periods throughout the day if gallery maintenance is necessary.
- Personal photography is allowed and encouraged! Use #rainroom or tag @LACMA to share your photos on social media.
- Rain Room uses approximately 528 gallons of water within a self-contained system. The same 528 gallons will be recycled and used throughout the entire run of the exhibition. By comparison, the average American family of four uses 400 gallons of water per day.
Random International
