Moby's Los Angeles
Recording artist, DJ and architecture buff Moby shares his picks for the must-see places in LA, from beautiful to mind-blowing.
The Greek Theatre
In the last 22 years I've played thousands and thousands of venues around the world, but the Greek is still my favorite in terms of setting, history, lay-out, and architecture. It really is the nicest venue in the world.
Sunset Ranch Hollywood
Simply: a beautiful place where anyone can rent horses and go horseback riding in Griffith Park. I don't know of too many cities with functioning ranches a few minutes from downtown.
Museum of Jurassic Technology
I'm hesitant to say too much about the MOJT, except that it very benignly and legally can create a fairly comprehensive derangement of the senses. It's a pointless activity to try and figure out what in the museum is real and what is not. Better to assume that everything is real, even if baffling.
Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine Temple
One of my favorite things about L.A. is the long and odd and diverse history of spiritual seekers setting up base camp in southern California. The Self Realization Center very beautifully covers all of their bases by representing a majority of the world's religions around a nice, sylvan lake.
Trails Cafe
I'm hesitant to mention Trails Cafe, as it's already a bit too popular and crowded on weekends... but it really is the most bucolic place in L.A. to get a cup of coffee and veggie hot dog.
High Tower and Alta Loma Terrace
Architecturally this is one of the odd little gems that makes L.A. such a strange and fascinating place to live. Little houses that look like art deco ocean liners suspended on a Hollywood cliff and only reachable via a beautiful elevator or a billion steps.
Echo Park Time Travel Mart
Not only do they sell time travel-related paraphernalia, they also have an amazing literacy program for local school kids. One of the nicest places in L.A.
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park
Just a few miles away from the center of L.A. you can find yourself in a completely barren and alien landscape. So alien, in fact, that it was used as a famous hand-to-hand combat location for Star Trek. So you can put on your Star Trek uniform and re-enact Kirk's famous battle...
Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Not only do I love the strange history and architecture of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, but I also love that they use it for concerts and film screenings and even the occasional disco party.
