LA's gay East Side has a sense of style all its own. Known for its hipster culture, you're sure to find gays sporting black-rimmed glasses, skinny jeans and the occasional cardigan. If you care to look the part while checking out the area, head straight to these establishments, all of which know a thing or two about looking 'hip.'

Tony’s Barber Shop

Hipster dudes love their facial hair. From goatees to Van Dykes, and even those Amish chin beards, East Sider face fuzz is as much a part of the area’s style as ironic T-shirts and pork pie hats. So treat yourself to a nice hot lather and shave at Tony’s old-timey barbershop in Cypress Park (formerly located in Silver Lake). Soak up the nostalgia as you shear your scruff.

Squaresville

For someone prowling the East Side for authentic vintage threads, the amazing selection at this tiny store is sometimes overflowing. On top of that, the prices are surprisingly affordable, often verging on inexpensive. Squaresville is definitely worth a browse, and its constant turnover means that return visits are a must.

You can pretty much assume that a shop with the phrase “Whenever You Are, We’re Already Then” will house an impressive collection of retro-centric kitsch. Any Robot Chicken-watching child of the ‘80s is guaranteed to find something of interest here. Novelties include Viking Tooth Darkeners, ‘All My Friends are Dead’ dinosaur T-shirts and an assortment of Dave Eggers books. All proceeds go to 826LA, a nonprofit organization that helps develop young writers.

Get your buzz on here—literally. With clipper cuts priced at $20, this chic salon offers the most stylish and most affordable haircuts on the East Side. The Hive offers a wide selection of beauty services, including cuts, beard trims, highlighting and Brazilian blowouts. The salon doubles as a gallery, featuring works by local artists. The staff is incredibly friendly, especially longtime Silver Lake darling Isadora. No one ever regrets getting buzzed with Izzy.

Franky’s

There aren’t many places in Los Angeles where you can stop in for a shave and taper cut, as well as browse reasonably priced vintage tees and belt buckles while you wait your turn for a chair. Franky’s Barbershop and Vintage Boutique lets you do just that. It’s a self-proclaimed “all-style barbershop,” specializing in facial shaves, fades, flat tops, taper cuts and style cuts. But you’ll also find an amazing selection of vintage rock T-shirts, vintage Western shirts, sunglasses, hats, belt buckles and even old vinyl. It’s the perfect place for an East Side makeover.
