Inspired by the Despicable Me animated movies, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem - a 3D Ultra-HD movie motion-simulator ride - and Super Silly Fun Land, an interactive playland adventure, bring the beloved characters to life at Universal Studios Hollywood beginning on April 12, 2014.
“We expect the Despicable Me ride to be a popular, family-friendly attraction for Universal Studios Hollywood,” said Larry Kurzweil, President, Universal Studios Hollywood. “The ride, modeled after the one at our sister park at Universal Orlando Resort, will continue the storyline of the main characters from the endearing blockbuster films through all-new 3D Ultra-HD animation, together with an interactive ride vehicle system.
The fully immersive experience features the cast of characters that has delighted audiences around the world: super-villain Gru, his adorable girls (Margo, Edith and Agnes) and the unpredictable Minions.
“The Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem attraction will push the creative envelope with its exceptional show content, sight gags, special effects and 3D digital animation," said Mark Woodbury, President, Universal Creative. "The ride’s exterior environment will feature even more thematic and colorful creative touches that will literally place park guests inside Gru’s world.”
Guests will experience whimsically themed queues, pre-show videos, and comedic dialogue that set up the central plot: Gru schemes to create more mischievous Minions from human recruits. SPOILER ALERT: Details about the Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem experience follow!
Guests are transported into Gru’s iconic house and meander through his living room, where they encounter many familiar visual elements – including the moon-shrinking SR-6 shrink ray – while zig zagging along a zany adventure through Gru’s super-villain laboratory. After donning specially-designed 3D Minion goggles, guests are sent on a wild journey through the frantic Minion training mission. The adventure culminates in a post-show Minion dance party, where guests of all ages are invited to strut their stuff.
Directly adjacent to Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, the all-new Super Silly Fun Land re-creates the memorable seaside carnival from the first film. The elaborate kids play zone - unique to Universal Studios Hollywood - is a colorfully themed, Minion-inspired area that will delight the entire family with a variety of fountains, water dumps and splash pools. A nearby dry play zone invites guests to climb, crawl, jump and slide. A themed ride soars and spins guests around for a view of “Super Silly Fun Land” aboard a fleet of imaginative ride vehicles.
Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem is a collaboration between Universal Creative and Illumination Entertainment, and was recently honored as Best Animated Special Production at the Annie Awards, which recognizes Outstanding Achievements in the field of Animation.
