West Hollywood is the thumping heart of Southern California’s gay community. The Sunset Strip, a stretch of Sunset Boulevard between Crescent Heights Boulevard and Doheny Drive, is one of L.A.’s most iconic neighborhoods. It was the setting for counterculture protests in the 1960s, rock and roll decadence in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and it exists today as a showcase for the good life, providing elegant hotel rooms, live music venues and fine restaurants.

The term gastropub, a portmanteau of "gastronomy" and "pub," was coined in 1991 when David Eyre and Mike Belben took over The Eagle pub in London. Twenty years on, the definition of a gastropub still seems to have a fairly wide range, based on the concept of a refined menu served in a more casual, pub-like setting.
Sang Yoon could easily be the poster child for gastropubs in the U.S. The chef and restaurateur took over Father's Office in Santa Monica over a decade ago, and installed a "definitive bar menu" with his now famous burger. Los Angeles gastropubs are opening their doors at a record clip, and an exciting new crop has emerged in the last year.
